Care

Caring for your rug

A well-made wool rug lasts for many years with a little routine care. Each product page also lists care notes specific to that rug's materials.

Everyday care

  • Vacuum weekly on a low or medium setting. Turn off the rotating beater bar, or use a suction-only head.
  • Use a rug pad underneath — it prevents slipping, reduces wear and helps the rug lie flat.
  • Rotate the rug every six months so foot traffic and sunlight are spread evenly.
  • Keep out of strong direct sunlight where possible to limit fading.

Shedding

New wool rugs shed loose fibers left over from shearing. It is normal, slows within a few months of regular vacuuming, and does not affect the life of the rug.

Spills and stains

  • Act quickly. Blot — never rub — with a clean, white, absorbent cloth, working from the outside in.
  • For water-based spills on wool, blot with a little cool water and a drop of wool-safe detergent, then blot dry.
  • Rugs containing silk or bamboo silk should not be wet-cleaned at home. Blot, then call a specialist.
  • Avoid bleach, ammonia and general household carpet cleaners.

Sprouts and loose tufts

Trim any tuft that rises above the pile level with sharp scissors. Never pull it out.

Professional cleaning

Have the rug professionally cleaned every 12–18 months, or sooner in busy rooms, by a cleaner experienced with hand-tufted wool rugs. Hand-tufted rugs have a latex-bonded backing, so they should not be soaked or machine-washed.
